Contents page photoshop draft 1

 First cover draft
Since I had not captured my main model in front of a simple green screen, I was faced with the dilemma of possibly editing the background from the model, it would be difficult to erase the lines of a colour varied background. I had always planned for a simple and clear contents page, so the naturalistic background would not fit with the concept for my contents page. Applying the 'quick selection tool,' as opposed to using the 'magic wand' I had been able to erase the background much easily, I had achieved applying Photoshop by cutting out the model from the background. I had also, similarly not used a green screen to capture a different model for a picture. I had wanted to capture a sense of grandness, so I had captured the model playing the piano, however this instrument could not be in front of a green screen so I had photographed the image with the natural environment. As the background was not as colourful, I was able to edit the background more easily.

Double Page Spread Drafts- Photoshop

My first Double Page Spread Draft.

I had taken this picture of my model at a landscape view, intending this to be my potential picture for the double page spread, I, again decided not to capture the model in a green screen as I felt it was very important to include the naturalistic background as I maintained with the front cover. However, as I had not taken many pictures nor put as much thought towards the perfect shot, I was unfortunately stuck with a picture which would be difficult to adjust and locate at one side, as the model is prominently perched in the middle and I had planned for a very direct equal space for my textual writing and the image. The background consisted of a simple wooden bench, with some greenery perched upon a stately bricked wall. I felt this scenery would be perfect for my magazine as it had perfectly consisted with the 'elegant' image. In order to fit the picture in the order of my initial planning, I had to cut some of the image using the crop tool on Photoshop and I had to re size it consistently, as it had to measure with the size and space of my text located to one size. Finally I was able to achieve some balance of the image and text and wrote my content.
            Double Page Spread Draft-Final
I had unfortunately not been able to screenshot my progress of  the double page spread as I had various problems with screenshots and the risk of losing my work. I had managed to crop my picture to fit at one side of the spread, however the effect was a little poor it still looks like the image was digitally altered instead of a natural picture, so if I were to repeat this again, I would take more considerations with my shots. However the image had had not appeared too unrealistic and still balanced well with the amount of text. I had applied the font 'Birds of Paradise' for all the main headings; such as the Masthead, the Artist's name, the pull quote and the introduction whilst excluding the actual text. I had selected this font as it was primarily on my front cover and I intended to maintain this consistency. I had made the the artists name more bolder than the other features in order to outline the main source of attraction, and the application of the white colour had significantly helped this process as it stood out in the colourful background. I had applied the same to the pull quote, however I made the text much smaller. I had added these features as I wanted to apply text so it would not get in the way of the background, which was very significant to my double page spread. My Masthead which was ' A new generation of talent...' had proved to be difficult to adjust and place as it was a very lengthy title in comparison, but I needed a dramatic flair to attract the readers attention. I had decided upon placing the title primarily on the box to put text as well as slightly on the picture. I had created an almost 'mirror' effect on the title, as the Masthead had spread to the picture, I had changed the original black colour of the font to a white colour, as the original colour had failed to stand out among the greenery in the picture. The way I had sectioned the text on Photoshop was initially very difficult, however through watching videos on line, I had managed to section two text boxes as columns, to specifically allocate my text accordingly through opening my paragraph options and then clicking the 'paragraph' bar, and changing the number of the first option boxes. Despite overcoming these struggles, I still had difficulty applying text without it resulting in various double spaced text which looked very messy and I had little control when it occurred, so I had to re size the actual text box so I could prevent this issue. I had avoided using flowery fonts as I had applied with the headings, so I had applied a simple 'Arial' font for the actual content for the double page spread. I had applied the colour of the text background text as white, as I had wanted to brighten the whole spread through the contrast of the colourful background and the white section at one side. At the end of my 'interview,' I had then applied my ending text with a bold font to indicate the conclusion of the interview.

Cover Page Photoshop drafts

First cover draft
After my adjustments towards the Photo shoot schedule, I had proceeded to photograph my main model Zoe and use a full body shot and a natural background as my main front cover page. The reason to why I had decided to capture my model in front of a natural background instead of a green screen, was due to the commonality of many classical magazines included a natural background. My original plan for the front cover had been different, consisting of various images, however this would not be suitable for the older audiences, which classical magazines commonly attract, who may appreciate more simplicity rather than various features. The picture I had taken with my model had a background with a discolored brick wall and with some greenery alongside a leafless tree perched above the model. I was heavily inspired by this the magazine cover below, as it had also a naturalistic background. I was heavily inspired by this the magazine cover below, as it had also a background consisted of imagery of nature, such as the branches being vaguely seen with a blurred background. Since I will not be cutting and editing my picture as my background is important, I have digitally manipulated the background to make it look as if it came from an oil painting, thus emphasizing the artistic nature of this magazine. In order on achieving this, I had clicked the 'quick mask tool' and then I had clicked the  'brush' tool and then highlighted only the model, in which I wanted to exclude the painted effect towards. After I had highlighted my model, I had then again, selected the 'quick mask tool,' which puts it in a temporary effect of selection. I had then selected the filter link and this offered me the option of selecting a 'stroke' painting effect. Which I have successfully achieved as shown below.

Although not noticeable at first, the intricate strokes of 'painted' effect is evident. I had also written my title, which was voted most popular in my survey, 'Modern Classics.' I had presented the Masthead in a way which is suitable for a classical music magazine. I had made the font 'Mistral'and the colour of white to consist with the
features for an elegant magazine. I had intended to make my top masthead 'Modern' stand out, so I had applied a double font, in which I had typed the same word with the same font and over layer the words on top of each other on Photoshop. I had little clue to what actual content I was going to include as it seemed that it would get in the way of the background. The problem with any future text would be the difficulty to see the front cover content as the background was already so colourful.I had applied the 'Birds of Paradise' in which I downloaded from Dafont.com, the font consists of the clear simplicity and elegance which represents the magazine. I had made the the 'artists name' in the colour of white, similarly to the Masthead, whilst I had made the pull quote a deep Maroon colour. I had made the barcode through manually applying varied stripes of thick and thin black lines, in which I had then applied the barcode numbers, this process was assisted through observing other magazines barcodes. I had decided to make my barcode small as I did not want it to stand out in contrast with my front cover.

Final Cover Page Draft.

I had now decided to add even more brighter colours on text fonts of my front cover. I had decided to do this because I had always intended my audience to be young adult as well as middle aged and because it was difficult to put neutral colours in front of a colourful background. The contrast of the artistic background and colourful font
would, I feel, target all varied ages for audience because of the distinctive contrast of features. I had now included more content and placed them in areas where they would stand out instead off looking dull in comparison. I was careful to include text that would not get in the way or overlap my background. I had applied the other fonts in simple 'Arial black' in bold and selected colours; Red, Green and Yellow- which consisted with the background colour theme, however I made the text more brighter for a more distinctive look.

Hand drawn plans for front cover, double page spread and contents page.

 Front Cover draft
My Masthead is located at the left top right of the front cover, with a logo situated right below. I plan on having two models on the right hand side playing their individual instruments. I also included a pull quote near the images, as well as text underneath, which would be information about the interview. I intend for my front cover to look dramatic through the colourful images and the bold distinctive text.

 Contents page draft
I located the masthead at the top of the page, I had included a variety of images as well as text so it consists with a well informative and colourful page, which are consistent in classical music magazines.
Double page spread
I had applied a simple and traditional format for my double page. I had sectioned half of the page in image and text. The title is typically situated above the two columns, whilst on top of the image, I have included a pull quote, which would be a eye catching line from the interview.

My School newsletter and evaluation

Evaluation: In conclusion, I have attempted to follow all the criterias to create my front page, according to my survey, however I had not made the colours of Blue and green as consistively as the main theme in the front page. I had made my newsletter more colourful and distinctive in order to create a good representation of the school. I had tried to add more colours to make the cover stand out, but I feel in order to improve my front page better, I should have included more options in my survey, include less words in my newsletter so it appeals to mass audience and improve the masthead because it looks unexciting and attractive.

Contents page to my school newsletter and evaluation

Evaluation: I had created my contents page in accordance to my survey, I had applied the most popular colours of blue and green as dominant to my contents page. I had decided to apply an prizes and competition page in addition to school news and events, as I concluded from my survey that students want a more interacting newslettter. Including a prizes section would entice more readers, instead of parents and governers. I made the heading colour green and made the font bold as well as distinctive. For the page numbers and subheadings, I had made the background colour blue whilst have the words in white so it stands out. In conclusion I had attmepted to create a contents page page through my survey yet I feel that I could thoroughly improve it by surveying a wide variety of people and not limit my survey options.

Picture analysis of my school newsletter

I used this picture for my "Art competition" section in my newsletter. I used this photograph as it depicts a studious pupil painting creatively and showing their talent through their artwork. The student hoovers her head down to show that she is concentrating and is serious about her work. I used this student as a representation of the school, as I am trying to illustrate in my newsletter that the students of Plumstead Manor is expressive and studious.

I used this photograph for the "School Sports day" section in my newsletter. This picture is a relay race which shows a few students running on a huge running track in fast motion with a few speculators- students and teachers, watching in the background. I used this photograph as this illustrates the competitors as the main theme and suggests the impressiveness of the students athletic ability. This image indicates that the students of Plumstead manor are very active and fit, which suggests the students are healthy and productive. I used this picture for my newsletter as I am trying to portray the versatile nature of Plumstead Manor and how students thrives from this aspect.

I used this photograph under the school trips and events section. The picture shows a small group of students standing in front of parliment, suggesting that the students of plumstead manor are becoming more enriched with knowledge, becuase they are learning about the political system of the country and understanding how democracy works in Britain. This image indicates that this picture signifies the intelligence of the students as they are seen to be benefiting from this educational visit. I used this photograph as a representative of the school to show how sensible and well behaved the Plumstead Manor students are outside of school, this illustrates these pupils are showing a good example.
Overall, I used all these pictures to show the versatility and enrichment of Plumstead manor in my newsletter. I attempt to to show the school in a positive light through the photographs as it  portrays students achieving a variety of successes in different activites and subjects.
